Divide Conquer edition by Murray McDonald Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Mr. McDonald has to be a major psychotic to write this thing but it was quite good. A more careful and slower editing would be good as my 7th-grade English teacher sitting on my shoulder would point out. Mr. M. writes well, though, and ya'll 'll enjoy the book. Buy it! (No, I'm not related; the book was good.)
What have we in this book? Mexican drug dealers - check; Russian spies- check; leftover Nazis - check; hostile government agencies - check, a plethora of dead bodies - check. The only thing missing were Arab terrorists.
The overkill was so vast that the book became funny. Humor or no, I had to push myself to finish it.
This is well written, page-turning escapism which grabs the attention and never lets go. The plot is complex and far fetched but made for good and entertaining reading.

Sean Fox, an ex CIA operative, returns from several years in Afghanistan as an independent contractor looking forward to some well deserved R and R. He is detained at the airport because official records show that he was visciously killed by a Mexican drug cartel 3 months before. Even more surprising, he learns that he is survived by a wife and small son who he has never met.

The son is kidnapped and very quickly Sean is fighting the Mexican cartel to release the son and protect the wife. Not only does he have to deal with the cruel and powerful Mexicans, but his return has triggered actons by intelligence agencies in both the U.S. and Russia. Before long Sean's struggle becomes an international one that will affect the future of the major world powers.

One reviewer pointed out some mistakes in US English usage but they were minor and didn't detract from the impact of the story.

Murray McDonald writes exciting thrillers. I enjoyed Critical Error and look forward to reading Scion.
When I read about the Rio Grande "dissecting" Laredo and Nuevo Laredo, I had visions of a watery hand wielding a giant scalpel, separating all the anatomical parts. The word the author was groping for is "bisecting," dividing it in two. When the knife cut "threw" the gunman's throat, I decided to write. This kind of thing consigns a good author's work to the free or bargain ranks. Spend a little on a decent proofreader, please. Edited to add Now I see the author doesn't know the difference between a shoe in and a shoo-in.
The story line was great! Characters and plot were well developed! The reason for the three stars vs five is because the editing and proofing of this e-book is horrendous, to the point of taking away from the flow of the story and taking the enjoyment of reading this novel away from the reader. Love Murray McDonalds work but very displeased with the shoddy product put out in Divide and Conquer.
This is the first book I have read by Murray McDonald. It was a bit more violent than I would have expected. But drug cartels are violent, so some violence was pertinent to the story line. And, then it got absolutely comical. The author introduces as a character, in this war on drugs, a fictional Governor of Texas, whom he has given the name Rick Brown. With all the murder and mayhem, which ultimately involves most branches of the U.S. Federal Government... the D.E.A., the F.B.I. and the C.I.A. to name just a few, all the fictional heads of these agencies, are firmly convinced that the Governor of Texas, named Rick, would be elected President of the United States. And, that's when I stopped reading this book. I know it's a work of fiction, but it went from tragedy to comedy, and then downhill.
The premise of this plot blends history and current world affairs in an imaginative and plausible "What if?" scenario. Three wrinkles kept this book from perfection for me too many typos, a truly annoying and distracting, frequently repeated wish by the main character to have been "at the beach" rather than in his current circumstances, and the author's mistaken expectation that the reader would accept that one supposedly brilliant and well traveled character could not tell the difference in sound between the German and Russian languages (one need not understand a word of either to detect that they sound nothing alike).
Do yourself a favor a get this book. It's a good easy read that you won't want to put down. And if you don't want to buy another book don't read the teaser for the next book at the end!
